One of the items on my list is to attend an opera performance in Italy once in my life. Unfortunately I haven’t been in Italy in a while, and probably won’t be there until at least next year. However, when the opportunity arose to experience opera closer to home, we didn’t have to think twice.
Last year, a local cultural organisation arranged a series of performance of the story of Orpheus and Euridice. Even better, it was an open air performance. Still better, it was held at Soestdijk Palace, the home of our late Queen Mother, which is not far from where we live. We didn’t decide to go last year (can’t remember why though), but when we heard that another series of performances were to be held this year, we jumped at the opportunity and bought tickets.
It was a great experience, even though I am no particular fan of opera in general. The setting was amazing (as you can see in the trailer below), the performances were top notch and I even got to practice my Italian listening skills. When we’ll be in Italy the next time, we’ll sure try and see another opera performance.
